Goodbye EA Sports FIFA, Hello FIFA 2K?
This reported partnership with 2K Sports marks a significant shift for FIFA, following the conclusion of its 30-year collaboration with EA Sports in 2022.
The decision to part ways stemmed from a disagreement over licensing terms, with EA Sports opting to rebrand its soccer title as 'EA Sports FC'.
It was rumoured that EA considered FIFA’s proposed licensing terms too restrictive, while football’s governing body is understood to have wanted to double its licensing fee of US$1 billion.
Despite the split, FIFA have reportedly stated their commitment to delivering an authentic gaming experience to fans, leading to speculations about its return to the simulation market.
“I can assure you that the only authentic, real game that has the Fifa name will be the best one available for gamers and football fans,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
“The FIFA name is the only global, original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26, and so on – the constant is the Fifa name and it will remain forever and remain the best.”
With 2K Sports' track record of success in sports gaming, including franchises like NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and professional tennis, FIFA enthusiasts are eager to see how the iconic series will evolve under its reported new stewardship.
However, as at press time, Take Two Interactive is yet to officially confirm the reports.
