The cricket legend feels there is potential in the players but the federation has played a part in the dwindling fortunes of the sport

Cricket Kenya Development Director Thomas Odoyo has revealed that the quality of the game in the country has completely gone down and it will take combined forces to ensure cricket rises through the ranks again.

Odoyo said it will take time before cricket goes back to the high standard and even get call-ups to participate in Test Cricket, the format played by the elites all over the world. He revealed that at the moment, Kenya can only participate in the T20 format, which is ranked the lowest.

Kenya almost got a chance to dine with the big boys in 2003 when they made history to make it to the World Cup and reach the semifinal stage.

“We aspire that one day we shall play in the Test Cricket because it is more advanced and is played by the elite. We are a long way from that at the moment," he said.

"Around 2003, we were almost getting there but currently, there’s a lot we need to do if we are to do well. We have dropped in our rankings and we need to work hard.

He added that Kenya is also not allowed to compete in the One Day International Cricket (ODI) tournament format since Team Kenya’s rankings have dropped immensely.

“We have to earn our status back and it is through great performances that we can only go back to our glory days,” added Odoyo.

Odoyo added that the federation will be waiting for the International Cricket Council to release the fixtures so that they can know where they will be competing next.

He feels there is potential in the players but the federation also played a part in the slowing down of the game.

“The pandemic wasted a year for us and then we also had federation wrangles which affected the game," he said.

"Going forward, if we have any issues in the boardroom, we don’t want such to affect the game. We want to ensure the boys keep playing…we want to sort out our structures."
