The Former India fast bowler has been appointed as Kenya's new cricket coach, aims to revive team's World Cup prospects with fresh strategies.

Former India international and fast bowler Dodda Ganesh has taken on a new role as the head coach of the Kenya cricket national team.

Cricket Kenya (CK) announced his appointment on a flexible one-year contract during an event at the Sikh Union Club.

Ganesh, 51, shared his enthusiasm on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

"Privileged to be named the head coach of the Kenya cricket team," he wrote.

His primary focus is to prepare the team for the upcoming ICC Division 2 Challenge League matches and the Africa Qualifiers for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Kenya, a team with a prestigious history, including five World Cup appearances and a notable semi-final run in the 2003 World Cup, has seen a decline over the years due to internal conflicts and management issues.

Ganesh, who has a brief but notable international playing career with India, expressed his optimism about turning the tide for Kenyan cricket.

"I saw the dedication and the hard work in past World Cups. I don’t know what happened in the last ten years, but I am focused on the now, and I see that Kenyans are champions,” he commented as per Nation.

Supporting Ganesh in his new role will be former Kenya internationals Lameck Onyango and Joseph Angara, serving as deputy and assistant coach, respectively.

Both have been integral to the team in acting capacities and are expected to bring valuable local experience to the coaching team.

Ganesh's immediate challenge will be leading Kenya in the ICC World Cup Challenge League, hosted in Nairobi from September 10 to 23.

The league, which also features teams from Papua New Guinea, Denmark, Kuwait, Jersey, and Qatar, serves as a preliminary qualifying stage for the 2027 ICC Men’s World Cup (ODI). Despite the short preparation time, Ganesh is confident in his team’s capabilities.

“The cooperation with the other members of the technical bench has been excellent, and I'm impressed with the talent here. Having watched Kenyan matches on YouTube and attended some club competitions, I can say they are in good shape,” he noted.

Ganesh’s insights into the team’s potential were further deepened by his prior visits to Kenya with the Karnataka Cricket Team, which included tours in 1999 and 2000.

His familiarity with Kenyan conditions and players adds an additional layer of expertise to his coaching.
