Angelo Mathews becomes the first to be 'timed out' in an ODI World Cup, sparking debate on sportsmanship and rules.

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews found himself at the center of an unusual cricket controversy during  Monday's World Cup group-stage match against Bangladesh.

In a turn of events that has since ignited debate across the cricketing world, Mathews became the first batter in the history of the One Day International (ODI) World Cup to be given out 'timed out' without facing a single delivery.

The peculiar incident unfolded when Mathews walked onto the pitch after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama, only to realize he had donned the wrong helmet.

This schoolboy error led to a dramatic scene where Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a 'timed out' dismissal, which is called when a batter is not ready to face the ball within two minutes of the previous wicket falling.

The match umpire, Marais Erasmus, had no choice but to uphold the appeal, leaving Mathews in a state of disbelief as he trudged off the field in Delhi.

"This is the first time I have ever witnessed something like this," remarked former Sri Lankan all-rounder Russel Arnold, encapsulating the shock that reverberated through the stands and among viewers at home.

The cricket community took to social media to voice their opinions on the matter, with many questioning the sportsmanship involved in such appeals.

While the laws of cricket were adhered to, the spirit of the game was a point of contention.

Angelo Mathews attempted to plead his case, citing a broken helmet strap as the cause of his delay, but his efforts were in vain as Shakib stood firm on his team's appeal.

This incident has not only put Mathews in the history books but also brought to light how infrequently this rule is applied.

Prior to this, 'timed out' dismissals were largely confined to first-class cricket. Andrew Jordaan's 1987-88 dismissal due to tardiness caused by flooded roads and Hemulal Yadav's absent-minded delay in a 1997-98 match against Odisha are notable examples.
