The 2023 African Boxing Championships was initially set for Tuesday, 13 to Friday, June 23, before being rescheduled for July 25 to August 6 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

In a stunning announcement, the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) revealed that the prize money for the upcoming 2023 Africa Boxing Championships in Yaounde has been doubled, setting the stage for an intense and financially rewarding tournament.

The decision was made during an online meeting of the AFBC Board of Directors, graced by the presence of Umar Kremlev, the esteemed President of the International Boxing Association (IBA).

AFBC President Bertrand Mendouga, with an air of excitement, shared the wonderful news with boxing enthusiasts across the continent.

Gold medallists at the continental championships will receive $20,000, silver $10,000, and $5,000 for the two bronze medalists.

The previous edition in Maputo had already seen respectable prize amounts, but the AFBC's decision reflects their commitment to elevating the sport's status on the African continent.

The 2023 African Boxing Championships was initially set for Tuesday, 13 to Friday, June 23, before being rescheduled for July 25 to August 6 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

"Our decision on the new dates for the African Championships is final, and we are now ready to organize a spectacular tournament," said Mendounga.

Meanwhile,  the number of countries attending the Africa Boxing Championships has swelled to 34.

According to the organizers, six more countries, including Kenya, are expected to confirm their participation in the coming week.

"We expect more countries to enter the fray now that the dates have been set and prize money declared," said  AFBC Secretary-General Andre Basile Kalong

"Never before have we had this high number of participants in the Africa Championships, we can't wait to welcome our visitors and let them enjoy our hospitality."

In the 2022 edition in Mozambique, Kenya took home four medals and was 12th overall, with two silvers for men's and one for the women's category.

Celebrated boxer Nick Okoth settled for silver in the lightweight category, the same as Samuel Wairimu Njau in the featherweight final. At the same time, Boniface Mogunde won a bronze medal in the middleweight category, while Elizabeth Andiego was the only Kenyan woman to return from Maputo with a medal.
