The 39-year-old wants to pave the way for young blood to take over from him and continue raising the country’s flag high.

Retired pugilist Elly Ajowi wants to ensure the continuity of the sport in the country by imparting upcoming boxers the necessary skills as they seek to make names for themselves.

Ajowi, the 2022 Africa Zone Three super heavyweight champion wants to ensure that he gives way to the young blood to take over from him and continue raising the country’s flag high.

The 39-year-old disclosed that age has caught up with him and he is not able to continue with the sport but with the skills he has learned for over two decades, he will be able to train young boxers.

“When you get to 40, it’s very hard to continue with boxing…at this point, my age can’t allow me to continue with the sport. I want to leave the stage for the young and upcoming boxers.

"At the moment, I have a small team that I’m training and I want them to know that everything is possible. I want to motivate them to keep going. I’m also teaching them some of the skills that I gained throughout my career,” he told Citizen Sport.

As he exits the sport, he has no worries since there are very many upcoming boxers who are also dominating the continental and global stages.

He added that boxing is a great sport since it imparts the youth with very many positive skills and he is glad to be a part of the transformation journey.

“I believe that boxing helps the youth to maintain discipline and stay away from drug abuse. In order to make it to the global stage, a boxer needs to maintain consistency in training,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ajowi has raised the Kenyan flag in many events and he will forever be remembered due to his dominant exploits.

He represented Kenya at the Africa Boxing Championships, All-Africa Games, Africa Olympic Qualifiers, and also the Olympic Games.
