In the 15 games the Lady Jaguars have won, Ageno has been named Player of the Game on 11 occasions.

When Uganda Gazelles head coach Alberto Antuna named the final 12 players who will represent Uganda at Afrobasket, Sarah Ageno's name was missing.

That came as a surprise to many who follow the National Basketball League and have witnessed Ageno dominate for her side JT Lady Jaguars.

In the 15 games the Lady Jaguars have won, Ageno has been named Player of the Game on 11 occasions.

She is averaging 14 points and 12 rebounds and is a strong contender for regular season MVP.

But in Antuna's explanation, the best team had to be selected.

"I have been following the local league, and I know that Sarah is like the MVP of the league, but as I said, I need to build the best team possible, not the best 12 players," Antuna said while appearing on NBS Sport Monday morning.

"I mean, we have Jannon that's been playing position four, position three, and now we are gonna have Jane (Asinde), Melissa (Akullu) can play four, five, let's see Claire (Lamunu), Maria (Najjuma), Akello (Hope). We forget Akello was playing over 30 minutes in the qualifier," he added.

"There are many players in the same position, and we need to take a decision. She's a really good player, she's a really good human, but it is what it is."

Antuna is no stranger to dropping players considered the best by those who follow local basketball, having dropped Zainah Lokwameri from the team that took part in the qualifiers in February.

The Spaniard has since gone on to omit Lokwameri from the team of 19 players who were summoned to start preparation for Afrobasket.

The Gazelles entered camp on Sunday and will start residential training on Monday until they fly out for the tournament on July 26.

Senegal and Mali are Uganda's opponents in Group C and will test the Gazelles' preparedness when the tournament gets underway in Kigali, Rwanda.
