South Sudan President Salva Kiir promises bright future for Bright Stars after Paris 2024 heroics

President Salva Kiir met South Sudan's Olympic basketball team celebrating their historic performance and pledging support for the sport's future.

South Sudan welcomed back its national men's basketball team, the Bright Stars, with open arms and jubilant celebrations, following their historic appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The team's journey culminated in a grand reception by President Salva Kiir on Friday, marking a significant moment of national pride and unity.

The streets of Juba were alive with excitement as thousands gathered to celebrate the Bright Stars' return.

At the heart of the celebrations, President Kiir hosted the team in his office, where he warmly commended their dedication and performance.

"The Bright Stars have not only represented our nation on the world stage but have also shown the resilient spirit of South Sudan," President Kiir stated.

He emphasized that the team’s efforts at the Olympics served as a beacon of hope and inspiration, showcasing the potential of South Sudanese sports on a global platform.

The Bright Stars made their Olympic debut with a stirring victory over Puerto Rico, and although they did not advance beyond the group stages, their performances against powerhouses like the United States and Serbia captured the attention of basketball fans worldwide.

Luol Deng, the president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation and a former NBA star, was pivotal in the team's rapid rise to prominence.

The government’s commitment to sports development was highlighted during the event, with the announcement of allocated land for the construction of an 'Olympics City' to foster future athletic endeavors.
