They maintained their composure for forty minutes, did not panic when Puerto Rico went on their runs, and as time ran out, they crossed the finish line and kicked off a celebration with the crowded spectators.

There were around 27,000 spectators in the stadium to see this historical moment as South Sudan beat Puerto Rico 90-79.

Puerto Rico led by nine points in a runaway game of runs in the first half, but South Sudan responded with an 11-0 run to take an eight-point lead of their own in the third quarter.

With George Conditt IV providing the spark inside the arc, Puerto Rico recovered once more, laying the groundwork for a crucial final five minutes of play.

Then, South Sudan may have chosen Nuni Omot or Carlik Jones to close the game but head coach Royal Ivey decided to use a completely 21-year-old JT Thor.

He scored four points in a row to close the deficit to 83–73, setting the stage for Carlik Jones to make the game-winning three-pointer.

They remained composed and avoided a late comeback since they had learned their lesson from their previous meeting with Puerto Rico, an overtime loss at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

This is Africa's first win at the Olympics in two editions and South Sudan now aims for revenge in their second group game to the United States of America whom they lost to in an exhibition a week ago.
