The non-profit organisation alongside Opportunity International is looking to carry out a decade-long project in Kenya and Africa aimed at nurturing basketball on the continent.
NBA Africa, an affiliate of the National Basketball Association (NBA), has laid out a monumental plan for a decade-long project in Kenya and the African continent.
The non-profit organisation has partnered with Opportunity International, another global non-profit organisation to oversee the continental project.
The project will see the two collaborators build 1,000 basketball courts in Africa over the next decade, including 100 in Kenya.
Speaking at the launch on Tuesday, October 8, NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum expressed optimism in undertaking the project together with Opportunity International.

The basketball great helped Team USA to a dramatic gold at Paris 2024, defeating France 98-87 in a classic final at the Bercy Arena.
“Our collaboration with Opportunity International reflects our commitment to investing in local basketball ecosystems across Africa and providing youth with the resources and opportunities to develop their leadership and basketball skills,” said Tatum.
“We look forward to working together to create safe spaces where Kenyan and Rwandan youth can play the game and participate in programs that help develop the next generation of coaches and mentors,” he added.
Also in attendance was Opportunity International CEO Atul Tandon who expressed that the collaboration was a major milestone for the future of Basketball in Africa.
“We are absolutely thrilled to work with NBA Africa to bring world-class basketball courts and coaches to Africa,” expressed the CEO.

The continental showpiece is set to take place in Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties from October 9-13.
“This initiative is key to our longstanding commitment to bring more education and more opportunities to the youth of Africa, and we are grateful to NBA Africa, NBA Deputy Commissioner Tatum, and our longtime friend and partner Sam Garvin for coming together to help build a rising Africa.”
The first phase of the project will kick-off in 2025 with Nairobi, Kenya and Kigali, Rwanda set benefit from outdoor basketball courts youth clinics.
The collaboration will also provide development programs for coaches and teachers aimed at providing them with skills and best practices in coaching, refereeing, game operations, event management and program administration.
