A third-quarter onslaught from Stephen Nyeko’s charges had them out of sight as shots started to fall from Peter Cheng and Williams Jimmy D.

Namuwongo Blazers continued with their good run by defeating UCU Canons 66-47 Friday night at YMCA, Wandegeya.

Last season’s runners-up used the third quarter of the game to create daylight between themselves and the University side before completing the job in the fourth.

The Canons started on the front foot to lead 16-11 at the end of the first quarter, with Joel Kayiira dominating the boards.

The Blazers bounced back to take the second frame 17-11 and lead by a point (38-37) going into the halftime break.

A third-quarter onslaught from Stephen Nyeko’s charges had them out of sight as shots started to fall from Peter Cheng and Williams Jimmy D.

What was a one-point lead at the half ballooned to 13 (51-38), and there was no coming back for the Canons, who were without head coach Nicholas Natuhereza, forward Rogers Dauna and centre Peter Sifuma.

Jimmy D shot five-for-12 from two-point range and two-for-six from downtown to contribute 18 points in his second game for the Blazers, while Chris Omanye added 11 points.

Michael Makiadi pulled down 18 rebounds but shot a dismal three-for-15 en route to six points.

For the Canons, Kayiira, Lwabaga Ibanda and Jimmy Otim scored 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively, but those were insufficient.

Kayiira, who played 36 minutes on the night, had 19 rebounds in one of his best performances in a Canons’ shirt.
