Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham has insisted that Africa has the potential to produce the next NBA and WNBA stars if federations take the sport seriously.

Ham, who coaches renowned players like Lebron James, emphasized that the coaches should keep on the hard work and continue teaching the youngsters on important skills and the rules of the game.

Speaking to Capital Sport, Ham said: “They should continue to teach, both the individuals and the teams on the small details of the game.

Break things down for the youngsters and teach them rebounding, defending, and playmaking. They should emphasize sharing the responsibilities of the team.

They should take their time, watch films, get on the code, and ensure workouts are adhered to strictly. With this, you will see a ton of new players both men and women coming out of Africa and going to the NBA and WNBA.”

Speaking after a successful conclusion of the 19th edition of the Basketball Without Borders (BWB) organised by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), he added that there is a lot of talent in Africa and they have the potential to go far.

I think the soil is very rich here…there’s always talent. When I came here as a player in 2005, I could tell something wonderful was being started. This is phenomenal…it’s all top shelf and of the highest level,” he said.

He added that if the youngsters continue to work the way they do, they have a bright future ahead of them which includes working in NBA as players or coaches or executives.
