Between 2014 and 2019, Achieng dominated the women’s league and was voted as NBL Playoffs MVP for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Former UCU Lady Canons captain Vilma Owino Achieng is one of the players selected to represent Kenya at this week’s FIBA Zone V Afrobasket Qualifiers in Kampala, Uganda.
The KPA centre is one of the 12 players who flew in for the tournament and she will be in familiar territory having played in the National Basketball League for six years.
Between 2014 and 2019, Achieng dominated the women’s league and was voted as NBL Playoffs MVP for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons.
She helped the Lady Canons to a three-peat between 2015 and 2017.
But her return to Kampala will be about helping Kenya book a ticket to Afrobasket.
George Mayenga’s charges won the qualifiers held in Kigali, Rwanda in 2021 and went on to finish ninth at the Afrobasket in Cameroon.
The Lionesses are captained by Equity Bank’s Melissa Akinyi. The squad has also been boosted by the arrival of Mercy Wanyama.
Uganda, South Sudan, Egypt and Rwanda are the other teams that will be competing at the championship. Rwanda, hosts of the finals, already qualified.
There is only one ticket for the teams to fight for and Kenya will fancy their chances.
