Kenya’s 400m star Zablon Ekwam plans to improve his 200m technique next season as he opened up about his ambitious plans, firing warning shots at Noah Lyles, Letsile Tebogo and Co ahead of making history for Kenya.

Kenya’s 400m star Zablon Ekwam has ambitious plans for next season as he looks to improve his technique in the 200m.

The men’s 200m has been extremely competitive this season but Zablon Ekwam is unfazed by the competition brought by the likes of Noah Lyles, Letsile Tebogo and Kenny Bednarek.

In an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports Kenya, Zablon Ekwam explained that he wants to run under 20 seconds and hopefully also represent the country in the 200m and 400m at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The national champion noted that when Ferdinand Omanyala was starting his career, he was discouraged and told that other stars including Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin would give him a run for his money but he has managed to make an impact on the Kenyan sprinting scene and change the narrative, something that Ekwam is also sure about.

“I have a lot of major goals for next season…we shall start with the indoor tour where I intend to break the 200m and 400m national records. I also want to run under 20 seconds in the 200m and I believe it’s possible if I just put in the work,” Zablon Ekwam told Pulse Sports.

“I want to break the barriers and I know I’m capable of that…I know many people will say it’s not possible just like they told Omanyala but look at where he is now. I want to compete with the likes of Noah Lyles and Letsile Tebogo and see how it goes. I want to feel that pressure because they will help me run fast times,” he added.

Ekwam has been very impressive this season, managing to make the cut to his first Olympic Games in Paris. He started with an African record in the men’s 4x400m relay at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow where Team Kenya finished fourth.

The 27-year-old could not compete at the World Athletics Relays after falling sick but after getting better, he went on to finish fourth at the Kip Keino Classic in an astonishing 44.69 seconds. He also raced in the men’s 4x400m relay race at the Kenyan Olympic trials before he proceeded to finish fourth in the men's 4x400m relay at the African Athletics Championships.

Before the Olympic Games, Ekwam competed at the Moore-Guldensporenmeeting where he finished fourth in the 400m. At the Olympics, Zablon Ekwam could not finish his heat after an injury struck during the race.
