Justin Gatlin has offered advice to sprinters like Kishane Thompson and Fred Kerley on how to stop Noah Lyles, citing Christian Coleman's victory over his American counter part during the 60 meter dash final of the 2024 World Indoor Championships as an example.
American sprinting legend Justin Gatlin has shared his advice for rivals aiming to dethrone Noah Lyles, the reigning Olympic 100m champion.
Speaking on his Ready Set Go podcast, Gatlin pointed to Christian Coleman’s 2024 World Indoor Championships victory over Lyles in the 60m as a strategic example.
“Like I said before nationals and worlds, to stop someone like Noah, you’re gonna have to punch him in the mouth,” Gatlin said. “You watched Coleman progress and get faster each round at Worlds. Hats off to Coleman for handling business—being the fastest starter in the world, the 60m should always be his race.”
Noah Lyles solidified his dominance at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a thrilling 100m victory. His 9.79-second finish narrowly edged out Jamaican upstart Kishane Thompson, who clocked the same time but settled for silver after a photo finish.

'It’s dog-eat-dog'- Christian Coleman breaks down the high-stakes sprinting game
Christian Coleman opens up about his intense rivalry with Noah Lyles, reflecting on their contrasting personalities, fierce competition, and how he stays focused amid the drama in the sprinting world.
Fred Kerley, the 2022 world champion, earned bronze with a time of 9.81 seconds after a slight misstep in his transition phase.
Lyles’ confidence remains unshaken. On Netflix’s Untold series, he unapologetically declared, “You can say whatever you want about the world champion, Olympic champion. You are stuck with me for four years, baby.”
Despite Lyles’ triumph in the 100m, his vulnerabilities were exposed in the 200m final in Paris. Letsile Tebogo of Botswana shocked the world with a stunning 19.47-second victory, relegating Kenny Bednarek to second place and Lyles to a second consecutive Olympic bronze in the event.

'That is beautiful' - American sprint legends Justin Gatlin & Tyson Gay agree with Asafa Powell on the appreciative nature of Jamaican fans
Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay have agreed with Asafa Powell on how appreciative Jamaican fans can be, contrasted to US supporters, who almost never care too much about their heroes.
For ambitious sprinters like Thompson and Kerley, these moments have added fuel to their desire to topple Lyles. Gatlin’s advice highlights the importance of consistency, strategy, and execution at every level of competition.
With his Olympic gold medal and a growing collection of accolades, Lyles remains the man to beat in sprinting. However, his rivals are sharpening their skills, motivated by the possibility of ending his reign.
As Gatlin emphasized, the path to victory over Lyles demands relentless focus and the ability to capitalize on any weaknesses. For now, though, Lyles continues to wear the crown of the fastest man alive with a swagger that’s impossible to ignore.
