The former world indoor champion has reflected on the high-stakes nature of modern sprinting, emphasising its unpredictability compared to the Usain Bolt era.
Former world indoor champion Trayvon Bromell has opened up about how dynamics have changed from the past generation of sprinters to the current generation.
The previous generation included sprinters like Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin, and Tyson Gay while the current crop includes Noah Lyles, Kishane Thompson, Fred Kerley, and Bromell himself among other sprinters.
Trayvon Bromell explained that watching the Paris Olympic Games 100m proved to him that track and field is changing and at the moment, the stakes are high, especially in sprinting.

The two-time world bronze revealed that during the Usain Bolt era, it was easier to predict who would win a certain race but at the moment, many talented sprinters are coming up, posing a challenge to the ones who have been dominant.
“We look back at the past like we love Bolt, Gatlin, Tyson, Yohan and those guys but when we watched a lot of races, we knew who was going to win by a big spectrum,” Trayvon Bromell said in an interview on the Journey to Gold Zone Podcast.
“We kind of knew based on how things looked. But now, it’s like you don’t know who is going to win the races.

Justin Gatlin agrees with Usain Bolt on why 2024 Olympic 100m final was not as great as the 2012
Justin Gatlin has agreed with Usain Bolt on why the 2024 Olympic final which saw Noah Lyles narrowly edge out Kishane Thompson was not as great as the 2012 edition.
He watched the people whom he had competed against in several races in the build up to the Olympic Games and watching them impress at the Stade de France unleashed a different hunger for him.
Trayvon Bromell was also impressed by Kishane Thompson, revealing that he had been watching him for sometime and finally seeing him making the podium was surprising.
“Then we got to the competition aspect, and it was everything I knew it was going to be. Obviously, I competed against a lot of the guys who went and got on the podium, especially for the 100m,” Bromell said.
“I watched a lot of the guys throughout the years who entered their way onto the podium like Kishane. Being able to watch that all play out, it was entertaining from the preliminaries to the final.
“You honestly couldn’t pick who was going to win. For it to end almost in a pretty much blanket finish, this is where sports become interesting.”
The American is back on track and has focus on making up for all the losses he endured in the past few seasons due to the injury.
He opened his 2025 season at the Texas Tech Corky Classic where he claimed top honours before heading to the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix where he finished fifth. He then finished second at the Millrose Games.
Trayvon Bromell was forced to withdraw from the US indoor championships due to an injury scare and he is now back in training as he gears up for the outdoor season.
