Sprint icon Usain Bolt had a special surprise for Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo after he was crowned the male World Athletes of the Year at the World Athletics Awards 2024 on Sunday.
The glittering ceremony in Monaco celebrated the finest achievements in athletics, with Tebogo’s triumph marking a historic milestone for African athletics.
Tebogo was among six athletes recognized in three categories, track, field, and out-of-stadium, before the evening culminated in the announcement of the two overall winners.

Julien Alfred was snubbed as World Athletics announced the winners of the track Athletes of the Year with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Letsile Tebogo claiming the respective spots.
American Olympian Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was awarded the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, while Dutch star Sifan Hassan and Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola claimed the out-of-stadium crowns.
Sweden's pole vault sensation Mondo Duplantis and Ukranian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh were named Field Athletes of the Year.
Ultimately, Tebogo and Hassan took home the overall titles of World Athletes of the Year.
Tebogo’s memorable evening was amplified by a surprise call from sprint legend Usain Bolt. "I got a call from a special person," Tebogo reflected, describing the moment he heard from the fastest man in history.
Taking to Instagram, Tebogo expressed his gratitude, sharing the moment with his followers and vowing to continue making strides on the track.
Bolt who holds the world record in the 200m event that Tebogo triumphed in, taking recognition of Tebogo’s achievements highlights the young sprinter’s growing influence in the global athletics arena.
The 21-year-old sprinter made history earlier this year as the first African to win an Olympic title in the 200m.
Tebogo’s inspiring performance in Paris, where he clocked an African record to clinch gold, cemented his status as one of the brightest stars in athletics while he also anchored Botswana’s 4x400m men’s relay team to a silver medal, showcasing his versatility.
