Bumper rewards are in the offing for athletes who will be crowned overall winners at the World Athletics Awards gala with Faith Kipyegon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Noah Lyles among the nominees.

World Athletics unveiled the nominees for the World Athlete of the Year Award set to be feted for their outstanding 2024 season.

The system for selecting the award winners has changed for 2024. Like last year, there will be three separate awards for men and three for women, recognising the athletes of the year for track, field and out-of-stadium events.

Besides, there will also be men’s and women’s awards for an overall World Athlete of the Year.

This will be the biggest award which will come with a handsome cash prize of $100,000 for each of the two winners.

World Athletics had been giving the cash award until last year when there was confusion on the criteria of awarding the winners with three categories; track, field and out-of-stadium, introduced and no outright winner for both the men and women’s award, as it had been before, to the disappointment of fans and athletes.

To end the disquiet, World Athletics decided to retain the controversial three categories this year but then added the overall winner for both men and women.

That is set to see each of the overall winners walk away with the bumper cash prize although it is still not clear if the other three categories will also attract prize money.

Olympics champions Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas, Julien Alfred and Marileidy Paulino are the nominees for the women’s track award while the men has Rai Benjamin, Grant Holloway, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Noah Lyles, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Letsile Tebogo.

In the Field Athlete of the Year award, Valarie Allman, Tara Davis-Woodhall, Nina Kennedy, Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Nafissatou Thiam are the women’s nominees while Ryan Crouser, Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun, Mondo Duplantis, Ethan Katzberg and Miltiadis Tentoglou complete the men’s list.

The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50 percent of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and social media votes will each count for 25 percent of the result.

World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote via social media on the World Athletics’ Facebook, Instagram and X accounts.

Individual graphics for each nominee have been posted and a 'like' on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on X will count as one vote.

Once the finalists have been established, a fan vote will open, for all registered users of Inside Track, to help determine the overall World Athletes of the Year.
