“I have been told to leave the sport so many times because there are people who didn’t have faith in me and what I was doing and there were people I had to brush shoulders with because I decided to follow my heart,” Were said.

“Among those who asked me to stop running, there are people who came to congratulate me after my qualification, there are some who have never talked to me since and there are a lot of things that have happened since.

“There are people who told me that I’m only wasting my time, some saw my potential and came and supported me and there are others who told me that I wouldn’t go far. I’m happy to have made the Olympic team,” he added.

Upon qualifying for the Olympic Games, the Kenyan has been burning the midnight oil in the search for glory and at the moment, he admitted to be in good shape.

Were added that this is a crucial time for the sprinters since most of the focus will be on middle and long-distances but he urged fans to also work with sprinters and rally behind them.

“I feel like I’m okay and ready for the competition. I want people to expect a surprise from me. I know the focus is on the middle and long distances but in the sprints, that’s where a lot will unfold,” he said.

“I would like to urge fans to have a positive mind and give us the positive energy. Kenyans should just support us through thick and thin.”
