Winfred Yavi has revealed the reason behind why she chose to compete in the 3000m SC despite all the risks.

The 3000m steeplechase is considered one of the most difficult races due to the high risk of injuries but Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Yavi fell in love with the specialty despite its danger.

The 23-year-old explained that she is aware of the danger the sport has but she chose to venture into it because of the few people who have an interest in it.

Speaking to Nation Sport, she explained that her coach, Gregory Kilonzo is the force behind her mastery of the discipline.

“Not so many love the 3000m SC because they are afraid of the hustle and injuries that come with it. I decided to focus on it because many people were afraid of it.

"I wasn’t that good when I started but it’s something I learnt slowly. My coach, Gregory Kilonzo has played a vital part in teaching me the craft. I remember we started in Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium,” Yavi said.

The reigning World 3000m SC champion also explained that her coach has nurtured her well and she gives all the credit to him.

Starting her professional career in 2015, Yavi explained that she feels like all her achievements are a dream come true. She noted that she did not believe the feats achieved so far but believes she deserves them.

This season, she bagged the gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary before bagging the Diamond League Trophy. Yavi then proceeded to bag double gold (1500m and 3000m SC) at the Asian Games.

“All my achievements are like a dream come true…I have been working very hard to ensure I make it to the top and I thank God I have finally made it. God has opened so many doors for me.

"With hard work and determination, anything is possible. I was not expecting to win the gold medal at the World Championships…I just wanted a podium finish but God blessed me with the gold,” Yavi said.
