Sifan Hassan has shared the reason why she might ditch the marathon ahead of the Paris Olympic Games.

Newly-crowned Chicago Marathon champion Sifan Hassan is uncertain whether she will run the marathon ever again after her experience running in the streets of the US city.

In a post-race interview, the Dutch woman disclosed that in the last 5km, her body was in pain and she was contemplating if she would ever run a marathon again.

She added that her hip was still in pain after finishing the race but she would have to recover first before making the decision.

“With about 5km to go, I was in so much pain and I was telling myself that I’d never run a marathon again. I want to recover from this first and then I will decide what to do.

I’m still in pain and my hip is very painful and I was suffering in the 5km. I’m not going to say I’m going to run a marathon again so I just want to recover,” Hassan said.

She clocked the second-fastest time in history, 2:13:44 to win the race and finish ahead of Kenya’s Ruth Chepng’etich who clocked 2:15:37 to finish second.

Hassan expressed her joy to have won her second marathon. She made her debut at the London Marathon earlier this year where she also dominated and clinched the top honours.

“I’m very happy to have won and I’m very grateful to have clocked the second-fastest time but I’m still in pain. I was not sure I was going to win because the field was very deep,” Hassan said.
