How Faith Kipyegon inspired steeplechaser Faith Cherotich to Olympics glory
Faith Cherotich is loking to follow in the footsteps of hero faith Kipygon after securing a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games.
In 2023, Cherotich, then a high school student at Kalyet Secondary School in Kericho County, faced the daunting task of juggling her final year of education with intense athletic training.
"Preparing for the Olympics was better than preparing for Budapest," she said. "That’s because I was still in school during Budapest. So going to school and having to balance athletics and education was so hard."
Cherotich recounted her grueling daily routine, stating, "In the morning, you have to wake up for training and then go to school. After coming home in the evening, you have to train again. There wasn’t enough time."
However, once she completed her exams, Cherotich was able to focus solely on athletics.
"When I finished my exams and began preparing for the Olympics, I was free for training," she explained.
"I went to three Diamond League meets. After that, I came back to focus on training for the Olympic trials."
Cherotich made a strong impression during the Diamond League circuit. She claimed silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the first meet in Xiamen, finished fifth in the subsequent meeting in Shanghai, and secured another silver at the fifth meet in Oregon, USA.
She then turned her attention to the Kenyan Olympics trial where she stormed to victory, emerging as the number one qualifier to Paris.
