Dutch star Abdi Nageeye has expressed his desire for a more stable approach to his training regiment, opting for one of Kenya's heart of long-distance running, Kaptagat as his base.
New York Marathon champion Abdi Nageeye has set his sights on new heights in 2025, following a season of highs and lows.
The Dutch long-distance star redeemed what initially seemed like a disappointing year after a dramatic walk-off at the Paris Olympics, where he failed to complete the marathon.
Channelling the frustration from his Olympic setback, Nageeye stormed back in New York, outpacing Kenya’s Evans Chebet to claim victory with a time of 2:07:39.
This victory not only salvaged his season but also reignited his ambition for upcoming competitions.
Nageeye, known for his nomadic training style, has often alternated between Kenya, Ethiopia, and the Netherlands.

'They’ve been very happy'-Dutch star Abdi Nageeye opens up on his newly-found celebrity status in Kenya after winning 2024 New York marathon
Nageyee is based in Eldoret Kenya, where he has lived and trained for 14 years despite representing Netherlands at international level - even winning silver for them at the Tokyo Olympic games, but his New York 2024 marathon win has finally earned him celebrity status there.
However, he now seeks stability, marking a shift in his approach.
"I’ve been changing things a lot, but this year I want to be stable. Even last year I was stable," Nageeye shared in an interview with Citius Mag.
To achieve this consistency, Nageeye plans to make Kaptagat, Kenya, home to some of the world’s top long-distance runners, his primary training base.
"I do my training in Kaptagat for the long runs and some sessions in Eldoret," he explained, emphasizing his commitment to honing his craft in one of the hearts of long-distance running.
While largely self-coached, the Olympic silver medalist has embraced the guidance of a coach in recent months, introducing a new dynamic to his preparation.
"So my coach is giving me more advice. It’s like I do myself 95%, and that 5% is about him giving me green light or suggesting changes. It’s good to have someone watching me now, even if it’s just to ensure I stay on track," he remarked.
Nageeye’s disciplined approach extends beyond structured training sessions, as he remains active even during holidays.
