Ackera Nugent silences Masai Russell yet again with powerful performance in Rome
Jamaica's Ackera Nugent displayed a devastating finishing kick to claim victory at the expense of Olympics champion Masai Russell at Rome Diamond League.
Russell, buoyed by her gold-medal victory in Paris, had a strong start and led for most of the race. However, Nugent, who was fresh off a win in Silesia the previous weekend, outpaced Russell after the final hurdle, crossing the finish line in 12.24 seconds.
Russell followed closely behind, clocking 12.31 seconds, while Dutch athlete Nadine Visser secured third place with a time of 12.52 seconds.
For Russell, the race was a marked improvement from her performance in Silesia, where she finished 11th in her first race since the Olympics. Yet, even after coming up short against Nugent, Russell expressed a calm confidence in her approach.
"My life has not changed that much since winning the Olympics, since I am still in season," Russell remarked after the race.
