This article delves into an explanation from Barnaba Korir, noting why Kenya will dominate the world of athletics for many years to come.

The 2024 Sirikwa Classic Cross-country was proof enough that Kenya will continue producing athletics greats in the many years to come.

The race organisers, led by Barnaba Korir, disclosed that they had planned for about 1000 kids but then a larger number turned out and they had to send some youngsters home.

However, he promised that going forward, Athletics Kenya will be keen to organise events that will host as many athletes as they can to avoid such inconveniences.

“We had so many athletes this time around and we did not anticipate the number that we had. We had only procured 1000 Bib numbers and T-shirts then we realised that the young kids were too many.

“So, we stopped some of them, and the total number that we had this morning was around 3000 athletes but we had to stop some of them not to compete.

“We turned away about 500 kids because we were overwhelmed,” Korir told the media during the 2024 Sirikwa Classic Cross-country Championships,” Korir said.

He added that Athletics Kenya’s main goal is to ensure they nurture young talent in the grassroots and they have observed that the establishment of camps is on the right course owing to the large turnout of kids.

He explained that the program of establishing camps was rolled out last year and it has borne good fruits meaning that the federation will keep investing in the sector as time goes by.

“We have had several programmes in Athletics Kenya all over the country, establishing camps, especially in the schools.

“Now we are coming down to the grassroots and the community to walk with parents and the schools so that we encourage and instill to our young people the importance of participating in athletics,” he added.

He noted that they witnessed the wonder of establishing the camps and going forward they will look into how to organise events because the numbers are too big and we have to allow everyone to compete.

He also expressed joy since every talented athlete is slowly realising the benefits of competing as he also lauded the older athletes for setting the pace.

“I’m happy that our people have realised that they can participate and be part and parcel of this program and also there are old people who are running and it is an encouragement to the young ones to continue participating in this important sport.

“We have increased the camps this year because the success of the previous camps has encouraged the government to continue giving more sponsorship to these camps.

“This year, we have 42 camps all over the country and there are some counties that are remaining. We have received information from the governors of counties like Turkana who want to be involved and we shall be going to see what to do there,” he added.
