Olympics champion Faith Kipyegon is looking to encourage her track rivals to help put Kenya on the map by visiting the country.

Multiple Olympics champion Faith Kipyegon hopes that some of her track rivals can visit Kenya to sample what the country has to offer.

Kipyegon feels Kenya is a great tourism destination that global superstars have to put in their holiday plans and wants to use her relationship with the runners to encourage them to visit the country.

The three-time Olympics 1,500m champion has been on a week-long holiday at the Amboseli National Park and in Diani with her family, having been sponsored by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), to leverage on her global brand to popularise the country as a great tourism destination.

Having had a first-hand experience, the mother of one now wants her competitors to have a feel, and she admits it would mean a lot for her since they have made history together on the track.

“I have so many friends [and] I will invite all of them, especially my competitors in 1,500m. If one day one time they get a chance to come to Kenya, I will be so happy because we have been part of history together,” she told Citizen TV.

Kipyegon won her third straight Olympics gold in 1,500m in Paris when she finished ahead of Australia’s Jessica Hull and Georgia Bell of Great Britain, who claimed silver and bronze with Diribe Welteji (Ethiopia) and Laura Muir (Britain) in fourth and fifth places.

The race also had her bitter rival Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia who faded to 12th place, while Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan is another one whom she has had intense battles with in the past.

Those are some of the names Kipyegon hopes can visit Kenya and get to experience the country’s tourism.

KTB Head of Communication Wausi Walya is among those who are in support of such a move as she believes it would market Kenya as a favourite holiday destination.

“Tourism is propelled by a strong country brand. The sports tourism environment has provided us with an opportunity to leverage on these global brands and embrace, including them in marketing the country,” said Walya.

Through the Magical Kenya brand, KTB hopes to boost the number of tourists visiting Kenya to five million by 2027 after recording three million in 2024.
