Beatrice Chebet has explained why she will not be able to compete at the Sirikwa Classic World Cross-Country.

National Police Service-bound athlete Beatrice Chebet will not be competing at the Sirikwa Cross-country Classic.

After her maiden victory at the National Police Service Cross-country Championships, Chebet noted that she will not be gracing the event scheduled for February 3 at Lobo Village in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu county.

The reigning World Cross-country champion has had quite a busy start to her season and she noted that she will need to take a rest before swinging fully back into action. She closed her 2023 with a stunning run to break the 5km world record in Barcelona.

Chebet then continued her winning streak to the Cross-country in Elgoibar where she took the top prize before also dominating the just-concluded National Police Service Cross-country.

“I want to have a rest and then resume training because I competed in the 5km race then I went to Europe and then now this (National Police Service Cross-country) …if I run Sirikwa, it will be unjust to my body," Chebet said.

"So, at the moment, I want to wait for the national trials where a team will be chosen to represent the country."

Chebet will be seeking to successfully defend her World Cross-country Championships title when she heads to Serbia, Belgrade on March 30.

During last year’s edition of the event, Chebet shocked the whole world when she became the surprise winner of the event after the leader Letesenbet Gidey, lost consciousness with a few meters to the finish line.

From there, the Kenyan will burn the midnight oil in a bid to join Team Kenya for the Olympic Games scheduled for Paris, France later this year.
