Competing on home soil Mu put up a good fight to clinch the title, clocking 1:54.97 to cross the finish line ahead of Keely Hodgkinson.

Olympic and former World champion was the surprise winner of the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting final held in Eugene, USA.

Competing on home soil Mu put up a good fight to clinch the title, clocking a Personal Best time of 1:54.97 to cross the finish line ahead of Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson who clocked 1:55.19 to finish second.

Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin sealed the podium in 1:55.96 as reigning World champion Mary Moraa finished fourth in a time of 1:57.42.

However, Mu will not be the one to walk away with the trophy and the title since she was competing on a wildcard entry. She has not raced at any Diamond League Meeting this season so she had not garnered enough points to make her credible for the trophy and title.

Hodgkinson will be the one to walk away with the goodies since she has been competing in a couple of Diamond League Meetings and therefore earned enough points to get her to the final.

Mu was planning to go on vacation after her poor show at the World Championships but noted that she changed her mind and wanted to end her season on a high.

“I just wanted the trophy…I don’t really care about the title. Maybe I’ll come out next year and win the trophy.

I just wanted to end my season on a high and I felt comfortable to come and run here. I took a step back from Budapest and took time to prepare for this and that’s why I’m genuinely happy,” Mu said.
