She added that winning gold at last year’s World Under-20 championships in Cali, Colombia is motivation enough for her ahead of the Budapest showdown.

Reigning World Under-20 champion Faith Cherotich is relishing her transition to the senior category at 19 years and has been selected to the national team that will be vying for success at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Unlike other young athletes, Cherotich revealed that her transition to the senior category has been smooth and so far, she is loving the challenge of racing against oldies like World 3000m Steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech.

During the World Championships National Trials, Cherotich displayed resilience and hard work to finish third in a deep field that had attracted more experienced steeplechasers.

To prove her passion for competing with the seniors, she was also in action during the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar, where she fought hard to finish third. At the Kip Keino Classic, she also stunned the masses after showing dust to senior athletes to finish second.

“My transition to the seniors has been okay and I’m always happy whenever I compete with the senior athletes. In the senior category lies that challenge that pushes me to do better every single day,” a shy Cherotich said.

She added that winning gold at last year’s World Under-20 championships in Cali, Colombia is motivation enough for her ahead of the do-or-die stern test that faces her in Budapest. During the event in Cali last year, she led from gun to tape to stamp her authority as a debutant.

However, she has been in and out of competitions this year and has attributed that to a niggly injury that almost stopped her from realizing her dream. Thanks to her coach, she has been able to come back strong and is targeting a podium finish as she heads to the global showpiece.

“I had an injury which slowed my training and I wasn’t even expecting to finish third during the National Trials. At the moment, I’m training hard so I can be able to finish in the podium bracket.

"Last year was when I knew I had the potential and I knew steeplechase would take me places. I want to invest in my talent and I am happy I have been selected to go to Budapest,” she added.
