The double Olympic and world champion will now shift focus to next month's World Championships in Budapest after her Monaco heroics

Triple world record holder Faith Kipyegon is now targeting a double at the 2023 World Championships set to take place in Budapest, Hungary next month after stunning the world to break the Mile world record at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco on Friday.

Kipyegon ran a tactical race to completely destroy Sifan Hassan’s world record time of 4:12.33 that she set in the same stadium in 2019. The two-time world champion clocked 4:07.64 to cross the finish line.

The 29-year-old has been in the form of her life since she started her imperious run of the Diamond League in Florence, Italy when she became the first woman to run 1,500m in under 3:50. She then conquered Paris a week later, this time splintering the 5,000m record, before laying siege to the mile in Monaco.

While she admits not to know what to do next after conquering all, she is focused on winning a third gold medal at the World Championships in 1,500m while also going for the 5,000m gold.

What will be the next - I do not know, it is in the God´s hands. I do not know how I am doing this because it just keeps going really in a good way. I was feeling healthy and just focusing on this world record," she said.

"When I started this season, my goal was to just break the 1,500 World record. It was still in my head and in my mind. Thank God I also did the mile and the 5,000…so many.”

The two-time Olympic champion also noted that it was an amazing adventure to compete with the the women cast that set clocked impressive times. Apart from her world record, the race saw 12 other women set Personal Best times and National records.

It was a blessing to do this with these ladies. I can see that they are all happy for me and it is so emotional. It is a blessing, it just does not happen every time you run. I have to thank God for this. I really enjoyed the race," she added.

She added that she had done her training well and was sure that something great would happen at the time.

“I have done good training so far and I just came for it. The time - yes, it was really good because the race was well planned. It just went smoothly and to accomplish the world record - that is amazing,” she said.

Kipyegon will now return home and focus on her final preparations before linking up with Team Kenya for the World Championships.
