Olympics marathon champion Sifan Hassan has expressed her delight at what she achieved this year, having won three medals at the Paris 2024 Games, as well as top awards.
Dutch long-distance running great Sifan Hassan is still celebrating her remarkable 2024 season that has seen her end it with two top awards.
Hassan was crowned World Athletics' Athlete of the Year and Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year at the gala held in Monaco at the start of December before being awarded Champion for Peace of the Year at the 2024 Peace and Sport Awards two days later.
The 31-year-old showed her remarkable strength and power when she signed up for three energy-sapping races at the Paris 2024 Olympics where she featured in 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon, medaling in all of them.
She won gold in the marathon, just days after her 10,000m bronze, having also claimed the same medal in 5,000m at the Games.
“What a year,” Hassan, still celebrating her wins, posted on social media on Saturday.
“I’m truly grateful for all the support throughout the year and for the kind messages over the past few days. Thanks everyone from the bottom of my heart,” she added.
Hassan's remarkable journey, from refugee to world-class athlete, was recognized by Peace and Sports to epitomize resilience and hope. Beyond her record-breaking performances in athletics, Hassan has become a global symbol of hope and perseverance, using her platform to inspire millions.
Her recognition as the Champion for Peace of the Year underscores her commitment to promoting inclusion and advocating for education and peace through sport.
The Ethiopian-born athlete is among big names to look out for in 2025 where she will likely sign up for major marathons and also feature at the World Championships Tokyo, Japan.
She has already discussed the possibility of signing up for four marathons next year, in what would be something never seen before.
"One time, I want to do four marathons in a year – from February to February. I want to see if it is possible. I really like it because I don’t know for sure if it is going to happen. I like the excitement," she told World Athletics.
