Mary Moraa's coach Alex Sang has given an analysis of the 2024 season, from missing the gold medal to winning the Diamond League trophy as Moraa prepares to end the season in New York.

Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa might have missed the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games but she bounced back to claim top honours in the women’s 800m at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels.

Moraa’s coach, Alex Sang, noted that it was in their program to win the 800m gold in Paris but the Kenyan sensation could only afford a bronze. Sang explained that winning the Diamond League Meeting final is a plus for Moraa who will be competing at Athlos, Alex Ohanian’s women-only event in New York City scheduled for September 26.

In Brussels, Moraa destroyed a strong field to claim top honours, clocking an impressive 1:56:56 ahead of Great Britain’s Georgia Bell who clocked 1:57:50 for a second-place finish. Natoya Goule-Toppin completed the podium, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:58.94.

Sang explained that having a plan after the Paris Olympic Games worked out well for them since they were able to go for the Diamond League Meeting final and win the trophy. He explained that most athletes and their managements who lacked a plan after the Olympic Games ended up not making it to the final in Brussels.

“To start with this, we had a program where we wanted a Paris gold but finally, we eventually got the bronze. Right now, we have the Diamond League win which is a plus for us and going forward, all is well. It’s really good and I’m very happy because there is progress each time,” Sang said.

“Last year we lost the Diamond League and this year we got it and we are grateful. It all goes with the program and we knew that after the Paris Championships, we shall have the Diamond League. For those who had no plans after Paris never made it to the Diamond League but it really worked well for us,” he added.

He urged the government to continue supporting the athletes through the Ministry of Sports. Sang explained that dozens of upcoming athletes are ready to go win medals for the country if only the right protocols are followed and the training facilities are upgraded.

“If we have everything right from the programs and training facilities, all is going to be well and we are looking forward to having more athletes join us. If the government puts everything in place, then we shall continue winning,” he added.
