US sprint great Michael Johnson has given his account of his battles with Namibian legend Frankie Fredricks whom he has termed “one of the most underrated sprinters of all time.”
American sprint legend Michael Johnson has showered praise on veteran Namibia sprinter Frankie Fredricks whom he had great battles with on the track.
Johnson and Fredricks battled for medals in 100m and 200m in the 1990s with the American winning a number of battles with the Namibian also claiming some.
He became Namibia’s first-ever Olympics medallist when he won silver in both 100m and 200m at the 1992 Barcelona Games and did the same at the Atlanta 1996 edition.

Multople world champion Noah Lyles is among those who have celebrated Fullmetal Alchemist’s Iconic ‘3rd October’ manga series, with the scene reminding him of his past struggles.
Reminiscing their battles on the track as Fredericks turned 57 on Wednesday, Johnson hailed him as one of the all-time greats.
“One of the most underrated sprinters of all time. We had some serious battles! Most impressive stat: Olympic silver over 100 and 200 in ‘92 and again in ‘96, while the gold and bronze medalists in the 100 and 200 from ’92,” Johnson posted on X.
Besides his Olympics heroics, Fredricks also won World Championship gold in 200m at the 1993 event in Stuttgart as well as three silver medals (1991, 1995 and 1997) over the distance.
He also has three African titles and two Commonwealth crowns and is considered the most successful sprinter Africa has ever produced.
Until the emergence of Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, no African sprinter had won medals in both 100m and 200m at the World Championships and Olympics before the 21-year-old changed it.
Tebogo bagged silver in 100m and bronze in 200m at the 2023 World Championships before making history by winning Africa’s first-ever 200m Olympics gold at the Paris 2024 Games.
