In the race that was won by compatriot Evans Chebet, Kipchoge settled for sixth place in 2:09:03.
“You did not want to talk to the media after the race,” the reporter asked Kipchoge as he faced the media for the first time following his disappointing sixth-place finish in Monday’s Boston Marathon.
“You are lying, ask the right question,” Kipchoge responded. “I did not actually refuse to talk to the media, did you talk to me?” he posed, to which the reporter responded, “No”. Kipchoge then said: “Then who are those media people?”
The exchange left those in the room a little surprised, and there were only two short further questions after that.
At the press conference, Kipchoge had explained how a problem with his left leg, as he approached the 30km mark, saw him fail to mount a formidable challenge as he fell off the leading pack and was unable to recover, finishing in 2:09:03 with compatriot Evans Chebet retaining his title after clocking 2:05:54.
“I had prepared for this race for five months and I was expecting to run a beautiful race,” said Kipchoge. “My left leg developed an issue and I could not run well when we were approaching the 30km mark. I had to run in a way that was comfortable and had to slow my pace.”

“My training is usually all-rounded and I did not face any challenge with the course or weather. I had to tell myself to keep pushing forward. It is always said that it’s important to win but I believe it’s great to participate and finish. Resilience is one of the recipes for success,” he added.
Kipchoge intends to take a break before plotting his next race with his management.
