Eliud Kipchoge displayed a rare moment of sportsmanship despite failing to finish the men's race at the Paris Olympic Games.

Eliud Kipchoge showcased an act of sportsmanship at the Paris Olympic Marathon despite failing to finish the race.

At about the 30km mark, the five-time Berlin Marathon champion stood and waited for the last athlete, Mongolia’s Bat-Ochiryn Ser-Od, to pass him before he walked off the course. He embraced an act of respect that many do not usually embrace when competing.

Going into the race, Kipchoge was hoping to become the first man to win three Olympic gold medals in the marathon but his dream was not realized.

The four-time London Marathon champion won his first Olympic gold medal in the marathon at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games before successfully defending his title at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

However, the course in Paris proved a had nut to crack for the legendary marathoner who was forced to withdraw. Tamirat Tola claimed the win in an Olympic record time of 2:22:55.

Belgium’s Bashir Abdi and the reigning Tokyo Marathon champion, Benson Kipruto, finished second and third in respective times of 2:06:47 and 2:07:00.

Kipchoge termed the marathon race as his worst as he has never registered a DNF (Did not finish) since he began his marathon career.

"This is my worst marathon. I have never done a DNF (did not finish). That’s life. Like a boxer, I have been knocked down, I have won, I have come second, eighth, 10th, fifth – now I did not finish. That’s life,” he said.

“It is a difficult time for me. You will see me in a different way, maybe giving people motivation, but I will not run. I don't know what next. I need to go back [home], sit down, try to figure my 21 years of running at high level. I need to evolve and feature in other things," he added.
