She will be Kenya’s sole representative in the women’s field which has also attracted last year’s first runner-up Ashete Bekere of Ethiopia.
2022 Berlin Marathon first runner-up Rosemary Wanjiru is confident of a win at Sunday’s Tokyo Marathon as she lines up against a strong field.
Wanjiru said she also hopes to set a new personal best time. Her PB currently stands at 2:18:00, a time she ran to place second at the Berlin Marathon where she was debuting over the 42km distance.
She will be Kenya’s sole representative in the women’s field which has also attracted last year’s first runner-up Ashete Bekere of Ethiopia.
“On Sunday, I am targeting to run a personal best and at the same time, win the race,” bullish Wanjiru said.
Bekere who is her closest challenger will be lining up with a personal best time of 2:17:58. She will be looking to go one step better in this year’s edition as Wanjiru fights to retain the title that was won by women’s world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei.
The Ethiopian noted that she will be targeting to improve on her time. “A 2:17:00 or 2:16:00 is what I want,” she said.
Wanjiru is aware of the tough competition and she is bracing up for the same. All in all, she noted that she hopes to execute a good run.
“If the weather will be good, I am looking to run well. I know the race won’t be easy because the field is quite tough,” she said.
She revealed that Japan is her second home and she urged fans to avail themselves and cheer her up as she looks to achieve her target.
