The last time Chepngeno made it to the national team was during the 2009 African Junior Championships.
Fresh from winning the 10,000m women’s race in the sixth Athletics Kenya weekend meet at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani, Vicoty Chepngeno is not resting on her laurels as she seeks to get a ticket to the World Championships in Budapest.
Chepngeno, the 2022 Houston Half Marathon champion, was in a class of her own as she destroyed a strong field to cross the finish line in 33:27.40 ahead of Roselidah Jepketer who clocked 33:47.70.

ATHLETICS Vicoty Chepngeno claims 10,000m victory at sixth Athletics Kenya meet
Chepngeno of North Rift was in a class of her own as she cruised to the finish line ahead of Nancy Wanjiku.
The reigning Toronto Waterfront marathon champion Antonina Kwambai settled for third-place in 34:02.30.
“My plans going forward are to make Team Kenya for the World Championships in August. I want to go back and invest more time into training so I can achieve my goal,” Chepngeno said.
The last time Chepngeno represented the country was during the 2009 African Junior Championships in Mauritius and she is keen to make a comeback. At the event, she managed a fourth-place finish over the 1500m race.
However, it will be a daunting task for the 29-year-old since the qualifying time for the women’s 10,000m at the World Championships currently stands at 30:40.00.
Chepngeno’s Personal Best (PB) over the distance currently stands at 31:42.90 meaning she will have to work a little bit extra in order to make it to the national team.
Since the year started, this was the first time Chepnegno was competing in the AK weekend meets since 2021. Although, she has participated in other races including the 10km race in Valencia where she settled for seventh place.

The Iten-based athlete also made her debut over the full marathon distance at the Tokyo Marathon but unfortunately did not finish the race.
She went back the drawing board and addressed the minor mistakes and attributed her dominant win in Kasarani to her hard work and following the coach’s instructions keenly.
“I wasn’t expecting this win…my hard work and following my coach’s program to the latter have finally paid off well,” she said.
