The veteran coach explained that Mary Moraa is an upcoming athlete who needs support from fans, and as she heads to Paris, they should all rally behind her and avoid having very high expectations.

Veteran athletics coach Bernard Ouma has urged athletics fans not to put a lot of pressure on Mary Moraa as she heads to the Paris Olympic Games.

Moraa was in action at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games but was knocked out in the semifinal after finishing third.

As she heads to the Olympics this year, fans expect her to perform well and hopefully claim a gold medal following her recent performance since the 2022 World Championships where she claimed bronze.

The 24-year-old proceeded to claim a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games before triumphing in the 800m at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

With her track record, Moraa will certainly be lining up as a favourite in the women’s 800m. However, coach Ouma has besieged fans not to overwhelm Moraa with high expectations.

“Moraa is upcoming and we don’t have to put a lot of pressure on her because I know she has trained well and we pray that she goes and wins a medal in Paris now that we don’t have challenges,” he added.

Ouma added that at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, there was a lot happening and Moraa was disrupted psychologically, hence the average performance.

He added that she had to go through a series of tests before getting to the Olympics, something the 800m maestro was not used to.

“In Tokyo, there were a lot of challenges and Moraa was just making her Olympic debut. There were issues with the doping tests and she tested positive three times and a series of negative tests,” Ouma said.

“Later on, she got to the Olympics and there was a lot of anxiety, what we call performance anxiety because if you are not settled, you are not able to perform well. NOC-K, Athletics Kenya and the government have taken care of us very well and we have high hopes that they are motivated and their performance will be very good,” he added.
