Top runners will be lining up at the Valencia Marathon looking to end their seasons on a high and walk away with the millions set aside for top finishers, course and world record breakers.

Thousands of runners will descend in the streets of Valencia ready to fight for top honours at the Valencia Marathon and hopefully walk away with the hefty prize money being offered by race organisers.

The Valencia Marathon is undoubtedly one of the most lucrative races in the world and before athletes break for the festive season, they will be looking to add more money to their bank accounts from running in the Spanish city.

Sabastian Sawe makes his debut there and will be joined by Daniel Mateiko, legendary marathoner Kenenisa Bekele, Sisay Lema and Mathew Kimeli among other stars. In the women’s race, Stella Chesang and Alemu Megertu headline the star-studded field.

The race organisers will award the first 12 athletes to cross the finish line and in this case, times will be very crucial for the athletes. If the winners of the race in the men’s and women’s field cross the finish line in 2:04:30 and 2:20:00 respectively, they will be awarded $ 78793.50. The prize money will be reduced depending on the times the athletes cross the finish line.

The organisers further noted that the first five men’s and women’s athletes of Spanish nationality holding an RFEA Licence will also be awarded. The winners will pocket 5000 € with those who finish second and third walking away with 3000 € and 2000 €. Those who finish fourth and fifth will bag 1000 € and 800 €.

Also, the first three men’s and women’s category athletes with a Comunitat Valenciana Athletics Federation (FACV) Licence will also be awarded.

“These prizes will be paid whenever times less than 2h20:00 in the men’s category and 2h45:00 in the women’s category are achieved. Men who achieve a time between 2h20:00 and 2h35:00 and women who achieve a time between 2h45:00 and 2h55:00 will have a 50% reduction in their prize,” the organisers said.

“Prizes will not be paid to men who finish in over 2h35:00 and to women who finish in over 2h55:00. The prizes for the general ranking, Spanish nationality and FACV licence are cumulative.”

If an athlete breaks a course record, they will walk away with €30,000 ($ 31517.40) while for the Spanish record, they will pocket €25,000 ($ 26264.50). For the world record, the athletes will walk away with €1,000,000 ($ 1050580).

“To be eligible for the prize money for Spanish records, athletes must be of Spanish nationality and have a federation licence from the RFEA. Athletes who collect the World Record prize will NOT be eligible to collect the prizes for winning this race or breaking the circuit record,” organisers said.

“To be eligible for cash prizes and trophies, athletes must be registered for the 44th Valencia Marathon. The organisers will demand full reimbursement of any athlete’s prize money if the Athletics Integrity Unit cancels the athlete’s sporting results due to a doping sanction.”
