Usain Bolt became a revered sprinter due to the strong foundations laid by his father and mother. Pulse Sports highlights everything you need to know about his parents.

Usain Bolt is considered the greatest sprinter of all-time following his remarkable success on the track which saw him win several titles and break multiple world records.

Bolt won eight Olympics gold medals as well as 10 world titles during his highly-successful career and remains the 100m and 200m world record holder, having set the 9.58 and 19.19 second marks respectively at the 2009 World Championships.

However, Usain Bolt would not have enjoyed such success were it not for the hard work and dedication of his parents, who laid a great foundation for him, ensuring that he lived in an environment that helped his talent thrive.

Bolt was born on August 21, 1986 in a small Jamaican town called Sherwood Content in Trelawny Parish to father Wellesley and mother Jennifer Bolt.

His parents noticed his athletics talent early and by the age of 10, he beat his mother in a race before he started competing in primary school aged 12.

Wellesley and Jennifer Bolt were both athletes but were not as successful as their famous son, who seems to have benefited from their running genes.

The two did not take athletics professionally but were there for their son, attending various school championships as Bolt started competing, to encourage him and ensure he was disciplined.

Usain Bolt’s athletics prowess came to the fore at the Waldensia Primary School when he outran his competitors to win the 100m and by the time he was admitted at William Knibb Memorial High School, he was looking at making a career out of sprints.

During these early years, Bolt’s mother would attend all his events to calm him and was there to offer him a shoulder to cry on whenever he lost.

“We say things that will make him laugh, I tell him just stay focused, remember God, remember to pray, and read your Bible,” Jennifer said in a 2016 interview over how she calmed her son.

Meanwhile, father Wellesley ensured a young Usain Bolt would wake up at 5.3am so that he was not late for school and would make surprise visits to ensure his son was on his best behaviour.

“In the early part, he would try to skip training sometimes to go and play those video games in Falmouth. So, I always had to be on top of that,” Wellesley said in 2016.

That early grounding shaped Usain Bolt into a revered sprinter and even when he started shaking the world, his parents were there at every event, watching and encouraging him until his retirement in 2017.

Where do Usain Bolt’s parents live?

While Usain Bolt left Sherwood Content at 15 for the capital Kingston to continue with his athletics career, Wellesley and Jennifer Bolt did not move, opting to remain in the humble village.

However, their house underwent major renovations and stands out compared to the other dwellings in the rugged village.

Usain Bolt makes occasional visits and spends more time with them during Christmas when he normally has a week-long treat for children at his local primary school every year.

Wellesley and Jennifer Bolt run a popular store in Sherwood Content which provides satisfaction as they not only look at it as a business, but also as a way of giving back to the society.

They have been running the store since 2002, even before Usain Bolt became famous, but his father had been working at the coffee board for 16 years prior to opening it.

The sprinter’s first name Usain was suggested to his mother by her nephew-in-law while his middle name St Leo was given to him by his aunt.

Jennifer is a devout Seventh-day Adventist and struggled to find the right balance between supporting her son and going to church as most of his races were on Saturday.

Meanwhile, his father Wellesley had a phobia for flying and because of this, he missed Usain Bolt’s record-setting 100m run at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when he ran 9.69, watching on TV as his mother was in the stands. After that, he never missed a Usain Bolt race again.

Usain Bolt and his mother have had a strong bond since he was a child. “The only thing that can make me cry is my mum. If I disappoint her or upset her or we’re not speaking, or something goes wrong, then I cry. A momma’s boy,” Bolt said in 2021 as per Essentially Sports.

Such has been Wellesley and Jennifer’s support for Usain Bolt and now, they can sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour thanks to the success of their famous son, now, the fastest man alive.
