World 5000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs, and world record holder Mondo Duplantis will be among the athletes hoping to have a share of the Ksh 71 million set up for prize money at the European Championships.

The European Athletics Championships will be coming up from June 7 to 12 at the Olympic Stadium, Foro Italico Park and some of Rome's most picturesque streets with dozens of athletes looking to impress and continue their build up to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The likes of reigning world 5000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, world record holder Armand Duplantis, Karsten Warholm, Gianmarco Tamberi, Miltiadis Tentoglou, Daniel Stahl, Femke Bol and Yaroslava Mahuchikh have already confirmed their participation at the event.

Apart from impressing at the event, the athletes will be looking to get a share of the Ksh 71,000,482 (€500,000) prize purse set aside by the event organisers.

For the first time in the history of the competition, all athletes entering will compete for an overall pot of €500,000, setting the stage for a historic summer of sport.

European Athletics President Dombromir Karamarinov expressed excitement to be hosting another edition of the event and noted that it is ‘a truly historic development for the sport in Europe.’

“Within athletics, we are rightly proud of our rich heritage. To ensure our sport remains healthy, prosperous, and high-profile into the future, we need to be innovative, particularly with our showpiece event, the European Athletics Championships.

“We want to see the best European athletes, delivering their best performances at our biggest competition. The performance bonuses will help achieve those aims to make Roma 2024 the exciting spectacle we all know it will be.

“Our sport has long set an example for gender equality and equal opportunities, and we often take it for granted. But we should also celebrate that equal pay and recognition for male and female disciplines is something that is both expected and delivered in athletics.

“Closer collaboration with elite athletes to promote our major events is core to the Strategic Roadmap and we welcome continued partnership to grow our sport together,” he said as quoted by Sports Beat.
