The Kenyan sporting community came together in heartfelt solidarity to honor the late Janet Wanja, a legendary volleyball star who succumbed to gallbladder cancer after a four-month battle.
Wanja, celebrated for her decades-long contribution to the Malkia Strikers, passed away on December 27 at the age of 40.

Janet Wanja has passed away, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Kenyan volleyball and inspiring countless athletes.
The emotional tribute was led by track star Ferdinand Omanyala during a memorial service held on Thursday at the Kasarani Indoor Arena and attended by family members and sports figures.
Omanyala, a champion sprinter and a unifying figure in Kenyan sports, expressed his sorrow and admiration for Wanja’s enduring legacy.
“Life's unpredictable nature is a constant reminder to cherish every moment,” wrote Omanyala. “A champion's spirit shines brightly, even in the face of adversity. Rest in peace, Wanja.”
Wanja’s influence extended far beyond the volleyball court. She was a key figure in the success of the Malkia Strikers, Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, leading them to multiple victories on both the continental and global stages.
Her exemplary leadership and talent earned her respect and admiration as one of the nation’s most celebrated athletes.
Kenya Volleyball Federation President Charles Nyaberi also paid tribute, reflecting on Wanja’s profound impact.
“We have lost a star. We have lost a mentor, a trendsetter, and a marketing agent,” Nyaberi remarked, highlighting her role as a beacon of inspiration for the next generation of players.
Wanja will be laid to rest on Friday at the Lang’ata Cemetery, following the moving memorial attended by fans, teammates, and sports leaders.
