Curtains came falling on the World Championships on Sunday, August 27 with some athletes heading back home elated after successfully defending their titles while others returned empty-handed after being stripped of their titles.
In this article, we shall examine the athletes who successfully defended their titles at the World Championships in the Hungarian capital.
1) Grant Holloway

America’s Grant Holloway is one athlete who successfully defended his world title after running a tactical race to clinch his third successive world title over the 110m Hurdle race.
Holloway started off his hot streak at the 2019 World Championships in Doha then proceeded to the 2022 edition in Eugene, USA where he also shone on home soil.
Going to Budapest, Holloway had one goal to accomplish and he tactically executed the race to successfully defend his title.
2) Shericka Jackson
Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson also had a successful outing at the just concluded global showpiece where she managed to defend her world 200m title. She clocked 21.41 to cross the finish line ahead of USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson.

Her time was just a few micro-seconds off the world record which currently stands at 21.34 and was set by Florence Griffith-Joyner at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.
Jackson was hoping to win a double but unfortunately finished second in the 100m where she was edged out by Richardson.

America’s Noah Lyles has been making headlines recently with his impeccable form that saw him clinch double victory both in the 100m and 200m.

He successfully managed to defend his 200m title and beat Botswana’s wunderkind Letsile Tebogo to second place.
4) Faith Kipyegon

Triple world record holder Faith Kipyegon has had a stellar season so far and she is looking to extend the winning streak to the World Athletics Road Running Championships.
Kipyegon managed to defend her 1500m world title and also bagged the 5000m world title, to become the first woman in the history of World Championships to bag the two gold medals in the two events.

5) Soufiane El Bakkali
The Moroccan went into the championships with the threat of being beaten by world record holder Lamecha Girma. Girma was stepping on the track as a pre-race favourite but unfortunately failed to deliver.

Bakkali relied on his tactics to medal and they did not fail him as he managed to defend his 3000m Steeplechase title.
6) Jakob Ingebrigtsen

After failing to bag the 1500m world title, the Norwegian had to put in more effort to defend his 5000m crown or else he would have left the World Championships empty-handed.
