‘Time to end the debate’ - Noah Lyles & NFL star Tyreek Hill finally set date for epic showdown

The wait is over as Olympics champion Noah Lyles and NFL star Tyreek Hill have agreed to race each other, setting the stage for a major showdown.

The wait is finally over.

Olympics 100m champion Noah Lyles and NFL star Tyreek Hill will face off in a race either in the spring or summer to determine who between them is indeed the world’s fastest man.

After months of taunting each other, the two, who have never met, agreed to speak about the race and set some rules, the outcome being that Lyles and Hill will face off before he competes at the US Championships in July.

"This has been an ongoing thing for quite some time now, and I mean, everybody's seen the back and forth on social media. I've been very adamant to show people what real, true speed looks like," Hill told PEOPLE.

It is a race that will end debate between the two after the Miami Dolphins wide receiver trashed Lyles’ 100m Paris 2024 Olympics win, saying it did not mean much as he could easily beat him in a race.

Since then, the duo have had a go at each other with claims of “ducking” flying around and Lyles stocked up the fire when he held a banner reading ‘Tyreek could never’ following his win at the New Balance Grand Prix on February 2.

"I think it speaks for itself," Lyles told PEOPLE regarding the banner. "Everybody says that they're gonna be the world's fastest, but when it comes down to it, you gotta be the winner every time, each and every time, and every time I show up to the biggest moments, I win."

"That's why I'm the world's fastest. I did at the Olympics. I do it at world championships. I do it wherever it's needed to be done. And if I gotta go down and, you know, beat up on Tyreek to prove that I'm the world's fastest, then it's gonna be done,” he went on.

Hill says he wants to prove to the world that NFL stars once did track and can take over the sport if they wanted to. The 30-year-old has welcomed the trash talk but there are some topics that are off the table.

"I mean, as long as we ain't putting people's mamas in it, I don't care. We can go as far as far can be. We're here for a good time,” said Hill.

Lyles also feels obligated to face off with Hill to protect his sport from people who trash it as he feels flooring the NFL star will further earn respect for track stars whom he feels get so many “punches.”

"Track stars are scared to take punches or jabs. But if you gonna talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk," said Lyles.

The only thing the two have not agreed on is the distance of their showdown race. Hill had previously suggested a 40m dash which Lyles rejected.

"He already knew he was gonna lose that off the jump," Hill joked over Lyles’ refusal to take part in the 40m but the sprinter fired back.

"I did that not to embarrass you. I mean if it was 100-meters, it'd be a blowout, you know, we gotta meet in the middle."

Hill is not taking it lying down: "Hold on, hold on, blowout?! The only thing, the only thing that looks like it's blowing out is your hair, so you need to chill,” he responded.

Lyles will take part in the US Championships in July and before that, he would have faced Hill at a location yet to be determined.
