Keely Hodgkinson is just getting started and her coaches believe there is so much potential going forward, firing warnings to Mary Moraa, Athing Mu, Tsige Duguma and other 800m runners.

Keely Hodgkinson’s coaches Jenny Meadows and Trevor Painter have expressed confidence about the Olympic 800m champion ahead of the 2025 season.

Hodgkinson has had an amazing 2024 season and the coaches believe that she has much to offer, sending a warning shot to Mary Moraa, Athing Mu, Tsige Duguma and other formidable 800m runners.

The Briton 800m star started off her season with a second-place finish at the 13th Savona International Meeting before winning the Prefontaine Classic and beating world champion Moraa.

She then defended her title at the European Athletics Championships before heading to the UK Championships where she finished seventh in the 400m.

Hodgkinson won the FBK Games and then claimed top honours at the Diamond League Meeting in London before heading to the Paris Olympic Games where she claimed the Olympic title. She had to end her season after that after getting an injury.

Focus now shifts to 2025 after an eventful offseason and the main focus will be on the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China and the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. This will also be helpful as preparations for the LA 2028 Olympic Games begin.

“We’ve seen all the hard work she’s been doing behind the scenes and I just know this will be the beginning for Keely,” Meadows said.

“She’s got huge ambitions in the sport and she won’t stop until she’s won at least another gold medal at LA 2028. She’ll probably go beyond that as well. We know when to push and back off and we’ve also trialled some things in training. Of course, it always relies on consistency.

“The big aim in 2025 would be to win both the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing and the World Outdoor Championships in Tokyo. Sounds easy doesn’t it?!”

The coaches also expressed confidence about the Hodgkinson attacking both the indoor and the outdoor world records.

The indoor world record of 1:55.82 was set by Jolanda Čeplak while the outdoor record of 1:53.28 was set by Jarmila Kratochvilova’s 1983.

The coaches explained that Hodgkinson will attack the outdoor world record in two years since they know the potential she has.

“Physically we know Keely can run a 1:53 but 1:53.28 is something quite different. So 1:53 something in 2025 and hopefully we can push on in the future,” Meadows said.
