Alexis Ohanian envisions an even larger Athlos NYC event next year, aiming to elevate women's athletics and inspire global audiences.

When Alexis Ohanian set out to launch a groundbreaking women’s track and field event few could have predicted the impact it would have on the athletic world and the audience alike.

The inaugural edition of Athlos NYC, founded by the tech entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder, successfully brought together some of the top female athletes, dynamic performances, and an entertainment spectacle that extended far beyond the track.

Now, after the resounding success of this first event, Ohanian is setting his sights even higher for 2025.

Ohanian, who has long been an advocate for women’s sports and equity in athletics, expressed his commitment to furthering the reach and impact of Athlos NYC in a recent tweet, responding to Olympic champion Masai Russell’s excitement about the event’s potential.

“Don’t worry @masai_russell that's just the beginning — y'all proved that ATHLOS needs to be even BIGGER in 2025. 😤,” he wrote, promising fans, athletes, and supporters that the event was only in its infancy.

The initial Athlos NYC meet, held shortly after the Paris Olympics, was crafted to highlight the power and prowess of female athletes on an international stage.

For Ohanian, who admitted he’d never attended a track meet before witnessing the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, the experience of live track competition left a lasting impression.

“I had never been to a track meet before and then I went to my first one in Eugene. I saw the (Olympic) Qualifiers and so that was incredible right. I was like ‘okay this is so exhilarating,’” Ohanian recalled in a pre-event interview, sharing how his vision for Athlos NYC began to take shape.

Ohanian’s first-hand experience at the trials sparked a realization that there was more to be done to amplify the stories of women athletes and bring track and field to a larger, more diverse audience.

With six carefully curated events, Athlos NYC showcased talent from Olympic champions and star athletes, including Masai Russell, who competed in the 100m hurdles.

Russell’s performance resonated with both the live and online audiences, and she emphasized how the meet provided athletes like her with a platform outside of the Olympics to shine.

Adding to the excitement, the event did not just focus on the races. Fans both in attendance and watching from home were treated to live performances by Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion and DJ D-Nice.

The inclusion of music and entertainment alongside athletic competition helped Athlos NYC stand out, attracting a wider range of viewers and demonstrating Ohanian’s vision of an event that fused sports and culture for a more vibrant spectator experience.

The decision to make the event easily accessible online speaks to his larger mission of expanding the reach of women’s sports and inspiring young athletes across the globe.

“I’m watching Tara (Davis-Woodhall) who is so dynamic, she's such a star and she has her section of the stadium all gassed up for one of her jumps but at the same time there’s like a race going on,” Ohanian noted.

Looking ahead, Ohanian’s ambitions for Athlos NYC 2025 are clear: he wants the next event to be bigger and more impactful, bringing even more attention to female athletes.
