Hellen Obiri is relying on her familiarity with the course to confidently navigate her way to a potential victory.

Two-time world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri will defend her New York City marathon title on November 3 but will face strong opposition in the American city in the World Athletics Platinum Label road race.

Obiri made it onto the podium in Paris, claiming bronze in the marathon. It was her third Olympic medal, having earned silver over 5000m in 2016 and 2021.

Last year the seven-time world medalist became the first woman in 34 years to win both Boston and New York in the same calendar year.

Earlier this year, she retained her Boston Marathon title in 2:22:37 but has revealed the special connection she has with New York.

"There’s no place like New York, and I am so ready to defend my title,” she told World Athletics.

Obiri will have a quartet of compatriots for company including Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 NYC Marathon winner, who will be returning after finishing third last year and fourth in the Olympic marathon in Paris.

The Kenyan delegation also includes 2010 champion Edna Kiplagat, four-time Olympic medallist Vivian Cheruiyot, and Sheila Chepkirui.

Obiri said familiarity with the course gives her an advantage and believes she has every reason to cut the tape first.

"I have been racing very well on the roads in the US, and I hope I can have another good day that sees me in contention once we enter the final stages in Central Park.”

Obiri moved to the US in 2022 ahead of her marathon debut in New York that year, teaming up with a new coach and training group in Boulder, Colorado. She joined the On Athletics Club (OAC), an elite team based in Boulder which is led by former distance runner Dathan Ritzenhein.
