More than 30 runners, both male and female will be in action at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday hoping to finish among the top five and bag the hefty prize money.

More than Ksh 20 million has been allocated as prize money for the top five finishers at the Chicago Marathon, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 8.

The marathon has attracted more than 30 runners in the elite category who will be fighting for a spot in the top category.

Defending champions Ruth Chepng’etich and Benson Kipruto will be returning to one of the largest streets of the US with huge ambitions.

The winners of the marathon, both the men’s and women’s category will have the honour of walking away with a whooping Ksh 14,870,000. The second-place finishers will bag Ksh 7,435,000.

The athletes who finish third and fourth will pocket Ksh 3,717,500 and Ksh 2,229,000 respectively. The athletes who cross the finish line fifth will pocket Ksh 1,486,000.

In case an athlete breaks a course record, they are awarded an additional Ksh 7,435,000. The men’s course record stands at 2:03:45 and was set by Dennis Kimetto in 2013 while the women’s course record stands at 2:14:04 and was set by Brigid Kosgei during the 2019 edition.

The athletes who run sub 2:06:00 in the men’s category will bag an additional Ksh 5,946,000 while the women who run sub 2:20:00 will also pocket the same amount.

The male athletes who run sub 2:06:30 and female athletes who run sub 2:21:00 will also walk away with Ksh 4,459,500.

The male and female athletes who run below respective times of 2:07:00 and 2:22:00 will pocket Ksh 2,973,000. Additionally, male athletes who run sub 2:08:00 and female athletes who run sub 2:24:00 will walk away with Ksh 1,486,500.
