Bernard Biwott and Bedatu Hirpa impressed at the Paris Marathon, taking top honours and walking away with major prize money.

Bernard Biwott and Bedatu Hirpa put up great shows to win the men’s and women’s races at the Paris Marathon on Sunday, April 13.

The reigning Frankfurt Marathon champion cut the tape in a stunning 2:05:25, missing out on the course record that was set by Elisha Rotich who clocked 2:04:21 to win the 2021 edition.

Ibrahim Hassan of Djibouti came home second in the race, clocking 2:06:13 as another Kenyan, Sila Kiptoo, rounded up the podium in 2:06:21.

The women’s race saw Ethiopia’s Bedatu Hirpa clock 2:20:45 to win the race, also missing out on the course record by Judith Jeptum who won the race in 2:19:48 in 2023.

Another Ethiopian, Dera Dida, finished second in 2:20:49 as Kenya’s Angela Tanui denied the Ethiopians a clean sweep, rounding up the podium in 2:21:07.

How much did they earn from the Paris Marathon exploits?

According to the Paris Marathon organisers, the total prize money set aside for the top 12 finishers is €500,000 (Ksh 73,645,000).

The winners of the race, in this case, Bernard Biwott and Bedatu Hirpa walked away with a whooping €30,000 (Ksh 4,418,700). There was a bonus of €5,000 (736,450) for course record breakers but both winners fell short.

The athletes who finished second and third were guaranteed €22,000 (Ksh 3,240,380) and €15,000 (2,209,350) respectively. Those who missed out on the podium slightly with a fourth-place finish will pocket €10,000 (Ksh 1,472,900).

The athletes who came in fifth, sixth and seventh will walk away with €6,000 (Ksh 883,740), €4,000 (Ksh 589,160) and €3,000 (Ksh 441,870).

The runners who crossed the finish line eighth, ninth and 10th will also not be left behind as they will bag €2,000 (Ksh 294,580), and €1,500 (Ksh 220,935) each. The 11th and 12th-placed finishers will be awarded €1,000 (Ksh 147,290).

According to the French law, bonuses awarded by the organisers of the race will be subjected to a 15% tax for eligible runners.
