Beatrice Chebet won Kenya’s first gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Monday and she is guaranteed millions in prize money from both her country and World Athletics.

Beatrice Chebet is set to pocket nearly Ksh10 million following her Olympics gold medal heroics in Paris on Monday.

Chebet won Kenya’s first gold medal at the 2024 Games when she claimed victory in the women’s 5,000m following a great finishing kick that floored world champion Faith Kipyegon.

Chebet won silver behind Kipyegon in the same race at the 2023 World Championships but is now an Olympics champion, thanks to her great tactics.

She stayed close to the leading pack before surging forward to stun Kipyegon who was poised for victory to complete a Kenyan sweep of gold and silver.

With the win, Chebet is guaranteed the $50,000 (Ksh6.5 million) set aside for each Olympics gold medallist by World Athletics and there will be more rewards from Kenya.

The Ministry of Sports will reward each gold medallist with Ksh3 million while silver will attract Ksh2 million as bronze medallists take home Ksh1 million from the scheme.

It means the two-time World Cross-Country champion will take home a total prize purse of Ksh9.5 million from one race.

Chebet can double the amount to Ksh19 million if she manages to claim another gold in the women’s 10,000m whose final will take place on Friday August 9.

It is turning out to be a good year for Chebet, who besides the Olympics and World Cross-Country titles, also broke the 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic, the Eugene Diamond League in May.

With the Olympics gold, Chebet will also harvest more as her appearance fees will go higher in each of her next events.
